There’s something undeniably special about a winter spent out west - unlimited terrain to conquer, sun-filled skies, and of course, perfect powder days. Alta, Utah

Known for its challenging, yet invigorating terrain filled with deep powder, Alta is undeniably off to a strong start for the 2025/26 season. While there have been a few ups and downs given the previous warm temperatures, it’s safe to say Alta’s snow report is looking up just in time for peak winter. Thanks to the mountain’s north-facing trails and high elevation, ensuring all terrain is coming in at 8,500 feet or above, once the snow hits, it’s likely to stay a while. Since the start of 2026, Alta has reported over 66 inches of fresh powder, kicking off their 88th season in a truly epic way.

It’s important to note that Alta is a ski-only mountain, however, with the elite trails and projected snowfall this season, it may be worth it for the brave riders out there to try out a pair of skis. With two base areas to choose from, Albion and Wildcat, each location caters to skiers of different levels, ensuring there’s some beautiful snow for everyone to enjoy. Families and beginners are encouraged to get comfortable with Albion’s gentle trails, while thrill-seekers can hop aboard the Supreme and Sugarloaf lifts for a daring day of shredding.

Snowbird, Utah

Less than an hour from Salt Lake City, you’ll find the iconic Snowbird Mountain with over 2,500 acres of terrain ranging from snowy bowls to meticulously groomed trails. And with the amount of powder gracing Snowbird’s grounds so far this season, a ride up the Aerial Tram - leading to some legendary terrain at a height of 11,000 feet - sounds even more enticing. Let’s not forget that anyone can purchase a ticket to ride the tram, even if they don’t intend on skiing down from Hidden Peak, as the views alone are worthwhile. But for the adrenaline junkies who crave fresh powder and mindblowing drops, it very well might be an item to check off the bucket list!

With 135” of snow and counting so far this season, there’s certainly plenty to look forward to over the coming months at Snowbird. For those truly looking to take their ability to thrive in major snowfall to the next level, the mountain offers avalanche preparation courses, where participants are educated on how to handle terrain during an avalanche. For the skiers who are still getting their footing, Snowbird invites you to enroll in one of the many Discover Winter programs. This way, after a few lessons, you’ll be ready to take on the powder, hopefully with a newfound love for skiing!

Mammoth, California

With a strong start to the season, reaching a snowfall of 73” in December 2025 alone, Mammoth Mountain has proven yet again to be a worthwhile winter destination. So, it’s no surprise that nearly all of the 180 trails are open, both groomed and ungroomed, for those looking to carve their own tracks through the perfect dusting of powder. Not only is the forecast for natural powder plentiful, but the Mammoth staff has made a significant investment in their snowmaking equipment, taking the capability of white, fluffy terrain to a whole new level, even when Mother Nature decides to take a rest.

If the knee-deep powder isn't posing enough of a workout, get ready for an intense uphill climb up one of seven routes from the base. Oh, and did we mention the obvious - an uphill climb means no need to wait in lift lines. Something tells us the ride down will be that much sweeter! Plus, the Unbound Terrain Parks are filled with numerous new features, ready for adventurous skiers and riders to give them a whirl.

Sun Valley, Idaho

While this Idaho hot spot often endures colder temperatures compared to many other areas out west, one thing’s for sure in Sun Valley - the snow is unstoppable! Since the start of the year, the resort has reported over five feet of snow, allowing the mountain team to expand the skiable terrain. If you’re a downhill demon, get ready for the ultimate vertical skiing or riding experience on Bald Mountain. This area comprises over 120 trails and 12 lifts, and given its separation from the base, you surely won’t be wasting any time waiting in line.

Or, make your way to the historic Dollar Mountain, which just so happens to be the home of the very first chairlift. Yes, this mountain is popular among beginner and intermediate skiers, however, don’t overlook the 628 feet of vertical terrain under the sun, free of any trees to get in your way of having the ultimate shred day. Whether you’re looking to dominate snow-striken drops, brush up on your technique in the fresh powder, or even just explore Sun Valley Village with loved ones, Sun Valley is thrilled invite you all in celebrating 90 seasons. Idaho, here we come!

Aspen Snowmass, Colorado

While some areas in Colorado may be falling a bit short in the snow department compared to previous winters, evidently, Aspen’s kept up its reputation as a sure-win destination, especially since the beginning of this year. January is notoriously the peak month for this mesmerizing resort, as snow measurements have historically been at an all-time high come the new year. And given the latest fresh flurries covering the slopes, we can only believe that there is indeed a bright winter ahead, with over 5,700 acres of lift-accessible terrain, spread across four different mountains. So, locals and powder hounds will be racing to the gondola at the first sight of snow, as there’s something extra satisfying about carving those first tracks in your favorite trail. That’s not to say veering towards beautifully crisp, groomed trails is frowned upon even among powder-filled peaks - Aspen offers countless groomed trails like Deer Park, Hodge Podge, and more, that are sure to make for epic shredding any day of the week.

As the snow continues to fall, Aspen welcomes all athletes looking for an added challenge to give uphilling a try. It’s crucial that you’re prepared with the proper equipment and pass for this daring uphill traverse that’s sure to make you feel that extra burn, but there’s no doubt, you’ll see the mountain from an unforgettable perspective. The more snow, the more options for alternative outdoor adventures, like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and some of the most epic après culture out there.
