TSA Liquid Rules: Beware of the 3-1-1

No matter which airline you’re flying and what the carry-on or personal item allowance is for your flight, there’s one universal rule that applies to all domestic flights, and that just so happens to be the TSA 3-1-1 rule. Each traveler is permitted to bring one quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes through security, with each individual container holding no more than 3.4 ounces of liquid.

There are a few exemptions to the 3-1-1 rule, including medically necessary liquids, prescription medications, breast milk, and baby formula. When traveling with these items, it’s best to remove them from your bag ahead of security and declare them to the TSA officer for a separate screening.

Let’s take a step back, before you triple-check your detailed packing list, zip up your bags and head to the airport. The majority of airline tickets permit each passenger to bring one carry-on and one personal item, so it’s crucial to have a designated bag for each. While the dimensions vary for carry-ons, be sure that you’re able to lift the bag into the overhead bin yourself to prove to flight attendants that it won’t pose any issues with weight distribution throughout the aircraft. Personal items are intended to be significantly smaller, as they’re required to fit under the seat in front of you.
