Some say that summer is the most magical time of year, from beautiful beach days to mesmerizing mountain hikes and so much more. Plus, there’s something invaluable about the hot summer evenings, as the sun’s finally gracing us with its presence past eight o'clock, meaning even more time for activity, or even just relaxing in the yard with friends and family. And with the summer solstice coming up on June 20th, it’s the perfect opportunity to pack your bags and witness the magic of the sun resting at its highest point from an iconic U.S. location.
There are countless ways to celebrate the longest day of the year, whether you’re passionate about rigorous activity, soaking up the sunset, or joining in on the local culture. The West Coast has some striking views, parades, and festivals to honor the Summer Solstice, so get ready for an unforgettable experience!
Salt Lake City, Utah
While Salt Lake City is often viewed as a winter wonderland, believe it or not, this Utah destination has no shortage of celebrations for the summer solstice. Hop aboard the Summer Solstice Peace Train, where you can enjoy, and even sing along to, iconic music from the ‘60s and embrace a piece of history in an immersive way. Or, make your way to the Parowan Gap Sunset Observation, where you’ll be guided to an unforgettable location to feel the magic of this once-a-year sunset. End the weekend on a high note at the annual Summer Solstice Party and Picnic, sponsored by the Salt Lake CSL and Unity of SLC, on June 22nd. All attendees are welcome to help themselves to some delicious fried chicken, with the option to bring their very best side dish, potluck-style!
Colorado Springs, Colorado
It’s no secret that Colorado is home to some exquisite hiking trails, but oftentimes, embarking on these adventures is not permitted at night. However, in honor of the sun setting extra late on June 20th, adventure-seekers are able to participate in a hike that begins at 8:30 PM, with the rare opportunity to check out the Garden of the Gods at dusk. This unique experience gives a whole new perspective of the springs, while also allowing you to stargaze under the guidance of professional astronomers.
San Juan County, New Mexico
If you haven’t yet visited New Mexico but happen to love a good sunrise, it’s about time you make your way over to this serene state. To commemorate the longest day of the year, locals and tourists gather in San Juan County for various events, but especially to get their eyes on the picturesque sunrise, occurring at 5:30 AM on June 20th. It’s not every day you get the chance to witness the sun emerge in perfect alignment with the northern wall of the Aztec Ruins National Monument. If one San Juan sunset just isn’t enough for you, then set your alarm clock and prepare to enjoy the sunrise from Chaco Culture National Historical Park on June 21st. Make note that only the first 100 people to arrive will be granted access to the viewing site at Casa Riconda, but if you’re able to make it in time, we have a strong feeling it’ll be unforgettable.
Santa Barbara, California
There’s never a bad time to visit Santa Barbara, given the year-round sunshine and breathtaking beaches. However, the weekend of June 20th is certainly an impeccable time, as there are three days’ worth of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Kick off the weekend at Alameda Park’s Summer Solstice Festival, an incredible opportunity to embrace art installations, lively performances, sample local cuisine, sip on a cold beverage, and so much more. Each day comes with a different theme, lineup of musical guests, and the infamous parade, so there’s surely endless fun to be had all weekend long!
Fremont, Washington
There’s nothing like a summertime parade to bring instant joy, which is exactly what you’ll find at the 34th Annual Fremont Solstice Parade. Get a taste of this Washington town’s incredible community, as over 60 local ensembles make their way through the streets accompanied by massive floats, stilt walkers, and musicians, just to name a few. Following the parade, all attendees are encouraged to continue the celebrations at the Fremont Fair, where you can get your hands on some handmade art pieces, listen to live music, and crack open a cold one.
Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
Between beautiful golf courses, magnificent hiking trails, and endless sunshine, Arizona is undoubtedly a desirable destination to visit all year round. To experience this desert-like state in a whole new way, you’ve got to check out Petrified Forest National Park during the Summer Solstice. Within the park lies a smaller area, Puerco Pablo, and for approximately two weeks, at sunrise, you’re able to see the sun line up perfectly with the petroglyphs, highlighting the historical images that have been carved into the stone.
